Canada's main stock index edged lower on Thursday, led by declines in heavyweight financial stocks, while materials and energy stocks lost ground due to a drop in commodity prices. At 9:38 a.m. ET (13:38 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was down 47.28 points, or 0.29 percent, at 16,257.44.
Declines were led by a 0.4 percent drop in the financials sector, which accounts for about a third of the main index's weight. On the TSX, 61 issues were higher, while 177 issues declined for a 2.90-to-1 ratio to the downside, with 10.81 million shares traded.
The TSX posted no new 52-week highs and no new lows. Across all Canadian issues there were no new 52-week highs and one new low, with total volume of 16.83 million shares.
