The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Monday shifted Captain Mohammad Safdar (retd) to Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, after he was earlier presented before an accountability court in Islamabad. Strict security measures were in place outside the Federal Judicial Complex in Islamabad, where the accountability court is situated. Personnel of police, Elite Force and Rangers were deployed outside the building to deal with any untoward situation.
A team of the NAB brought Safdar in an armoured vehicle in the Federal Judicial Complex to present him before the accountability court. He was later sent to the Adiala Jail where he will serve his one year jail term.
Media persons were not allowed to enter the courtroom to cover the proceedings when Safdar was presented before the Accountability Court's Judge Mohammad Bashir.
Security personnel manhandled members of media as they attempted to enter the court's premises. According to the jail manual, Safdar is likely to be housed in a 'B-class' facility, wherein he will be kept in a separate cell and allowed to keep a refrigerator, television and a personal helper.
On Sunday, the NAB arrested Safdar, who along with his wife Maryam and father-in-law Nawaz, was handed out a prison sentence on July 6 in the Avenfield properties case.
Nawaz and Maryam were sentenced to 10 and 7 years in prison and slapped £8-million and £2-million fines, respectively. Safdar was awarded a one-year prison sentence in the same case.
The NAB officials took Safdar into custody after he appeared at a public rally in Rawalpindi following two days of mysterious absence.
