Awami National Party President Asfandyar Wali Khan on Wednesday said that the terrorist attacks cannot discourage determination of the party, adding that the party will continue to campaign for the upcoming election.
Talking to media at Bilour House in Peshawar, Asfandyar said that the party will observe three-day mourning over the sad incident after which, participation in the election process will be continued.
The party's main focus is to become victorious in the elections, he said, adding "We have to contest elections and win now."
Earlier, Haroon Bilour, Awami National Party (ANP) leader, and 19 other people were martyred and over 60 others were wounded in a suicide attack in Yaka Toot area of Peshawar on Tuesday night. The deceased ANP leader Haroon Bilour was set to contest the July 25 election from Peshawar's PK-78 constituency. A suicide bomber detonated his explosives soon after Haroon Bilour arrived in Yaka Toot area to address a corner meeting of his party.
Haroon Bilour was ANP candidate for the upcoming general election from provincial assembly constituency PK-78. Haroon Bilour was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. At least 12 other people, mostly ANP supporters, were also martyred in the suicide attack.
Emergency was declared at the Lady Reading Hospital, while large number of ANP workers also reached the hospital. Following the incident, the Election Commission of Pakistan postponed the polls in PK-78 (Peshawar-XIII) constituency.
The polls have been postponed due to the death of the PK-78 candidate, the electoral body said, adding that the new schedule for the said constituency will be announced later. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council has also announced three-day mourning in light of the attack.
