Ambassador of France to Pakistan, Marc Barety emphasized the need for enhanced trade relations with Pakistan, besides expanding cooperation between the two countries in various fields. Speaking at a reception hosted by French Embassy on the occasion of France National Day on Saturday, Ambassador Barety said that close cooperation between Pakistan and France will be a source of inspiration for the region.
He referred to the recent 13th Round of Pakistan-France Bilateral Political Consultations in Islamabad held on July 10 2018 in which the French side was represented by Secretary General Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maurice Gourdault-Montagne and Pakistan by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua. He added that the two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and identified opportunities for further cooperation in political, economic, trade, investment, defense, education and cultural fields.
"Unity is indeed a major factor of strength. Unity is absolutely vital for France, for Pakistan and for the international community," he said, adding that the world today is facing growing challenges such as growing population, terrorism and trade wars, etc.
For this reason, he said that President Macron has decided to gather the "Paris Forum for Peace" from 11th to 13th November, 2018, adding that the goal is to bring together all the forces that believe in multilateralism, collective action, cooperation and regulation. "These tools are not perfect, but they are indispensable to confront successfully the major challenges we are facing, from climate change to migration, terrorism or internet disorders," he added.
He said the governments cannot act efficiently in isolation and the West cannot cope alone. "This is why, in addition to representative of various states, we will invite international organizations, NGOs local or provincial governments, municipalities, trade unions, religious groups, companies, journalists, experts," he said and hoped that stakeholders in Pakistan will join the initiative.
The French envoy, on behalf of the French government and people of the France, strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Mastung, Peshawar and Bannu, and expressed solidarity with the people of Pakistan. A one-minute silence was also observed on the occasion to show respect to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.
Speaking as chief guest caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Barrister Ali Zafar said that Pakistan and France enjoy historical ties since the very day of Pakistan coming into being. He said that France was the first non-Muslim country which recognized Pakistan after its independence in 1947.
He also underscored the need for learning from the French experience in various fields, especially in dealing with the challenges posed by the climate change and population control. Earlier, national anthems of both the countries were played. The representatives from the diplomatic community, civil society and government officials attended the reception.
