The government hospitals in Sindh are being supplied with contaminated water, which is giving rise to water-borne diseases, Sindh Water Commission (SWC) was informed on Tuesday. Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources submitted a report to the commission, headed by former judge of Supreme Court Amir Hani Muslim. The report undertook the test of water supplied to hospitals in Karachi and interior Sindh. The report mentioned that its findings are based on 250 samples of water available in government hospitals.
About the hospitals of Karachi, the report revealed that patients are being supplied with sub-standard water at Korangi hospital, Qatar hospital and Lyari hospital. The report also covered over 15 districts in other parts of Sindh including Sanghar, Thatta, Tharparker, Ghotki, Larkana etc.
Citing the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, it disclosed that 85 percent of water available at government hospitals is sub-standard and does not fit the standards set by WHO.
It emphasized upon the need for treatment plants, filtration plants and ultra-filtration plants at the hospitals. The commission making the report part of its record directed the concerned officials to be cautious.
It ordered the administrations of all government hospitals to accord priority to installation of filtration plants and RO plants at the hospitals. The commission also directed Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources to conduct water tests at government hospitals after every two months.
