The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in the light of Pakistan Metrological Department's (PMD) forecast has issued a fresh advisory, directing the relevant stakeholders to remain alert in dealing with any emergency flooding situation due to ongoing monsoon. The NDMA following major forecast of rains in Dera Ghazi Khan division has specifically advised Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab to sensitize vulnerable communities, especially along hill torrents, for requisite precautionary measures.
As many as one death has been reported from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while landslide damaged two houses in AJ&K and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on August 9 due to heavy rainfall.
According to NDMA, so far 73 people have lost their lives in various rain related incidents across the country while another 129 have been injured. The rains have also caused damages to 259 houses. The details issued by NDMA here on Friday said total 31 people have been killed by various rain related incidents in Punjab, 18 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 13 in Azad Kashmir, 2 in Gilgit-Baltistan, one in Balochistan and 8 in formerly Federal Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
Out of the injured persons, 71 belong to Punjab, 37 to KP, 11 to Azad Kashmir, one to Gilgit-Baltistan and 9 to FATA. Of 259 houses damaged, 8 were in Punjab, 134 were in KP, 49 were in AJ&K, 57 were in Gilgit-Baltsitan and 11 were in FATA. It has also advised National Highways Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and Communication and Works Department (C&W) of the provinces to be ready for restoring road linkages. The NDMA has also advised health authorities for pre-placement of necessary staff and medicines where required. It has further advised the district authorities of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Lahore, Multan and Peshawar for timely clearance of sewerage / drainage system in all major cities to deal with any kind of emergency situation.
The PMD has issued forecast for today and August 12 (tomorrow), which says that scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated moderate falls are expected over the upper catchments of Rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej. Isolated thunderstorm/ rain is expected over Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha and DG Khan divisions and Northeast Balochistan along with Upper catchments of the River Indus.
Moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls are expected over Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad & Sargodha Divisions from August 12 and moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls are expected over the upper catchments of all the major rivers from Saturday evening.
