The Punjab police played the role of a silent spectator after miscreants blocked many main arteries in the city by dancing over loud music and carried out aerial firing, one-wheeling and used fireworks in "public" during the Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday night.
A good number of people gathered on Main Boulevard and Gulberg and carried out aerial firing and one-wheeling under the nose of police personnel who did not bother to take action against them. On Tuesday night, many youngsters at Liberty Market were observed dancing over a loud beat of music installed in cars, jeeps, vans, pickups and even in motorbikes. By paralising all sort of vehicular movement, some of the youngsters carried out used fireworks on Main Boulevard, putting a question mark over the safety of the people by and large.
A group of youngsters also stopped a Punjab Speedo Bus near Kalma Chowk underpass. The bus could not move for almost over 30 minutes after some of the youngsters laid down on the road to perform dance but police officials standing there could not dare to clear the way.
Hassan Siddique, a citizen, criticized security arrangements saying the Punjab police's top brass had claimed several times before the Independence Day that there would be a strict action against the miscreants but the situation on ground was totally otherwise. "Although I have not seen any major incident, except minor clashes and injuries, but there is a big question mark on the capacity of law enforcers who could not arrest those who violated law openly "Why the nearby police officers remained silent spectators!" he wondered.
"When I was celebrating the Independence Day with my friends near Liberty Round About, I saw a group of youngsters riding motorbikes shouting slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad' and hurling abuses at females in a car," said another youngster Majid Awan.
"Similar incidents also occurred in the city," he said, adding that there was a huge mismanagement on part of authorities, especially police officials. During the celebrations, it was also observed that many commuters remained trapped in traffic gridlocks for several hours.
