The candidates of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with thumping majority by defeating the candidates of the joint opposition here Wednesday.
Polling for the offices of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker held here in the provincial assembly with Presiding Officer, Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotha in the chair. A total of 108 votes were polled out of which Mushtaq Ghani of PTI secured 81 votes and elected as Speaker of the house while his opponent obtained only 27. The Presiding Officer, Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotha administered oath to the newly elected Speaker.
Later, the newly elected Speaker, Mushtaq Ghani chaired the proceedings for the election of the Deputy Speaker. The Speaker administered oath to the newly elected Deputy Speaker, Mahmood Jan. The joint opposition candidate for the office of Deputy Speaker was Jamshid Khan Mohmand.
Two Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) including PPP's Nighat Orakzai and an independent candidate from PK-25, Kohistan Didar Khan did not cast their votes. However, disallowing Nighat Orakzai to cost her remained controversial. She arrived in the house at the time of the opening of the ballot box and demanded the chair to allow her for polling her vote. However, the demands of both the MPA and other opposition legislator proved as futile attempt and the assembly begun counting of the votes.
In KP assembly PTI has a total 76 legislators including 16 women and two minorities' reserved seats while its main rival MMA secured only 13 seats including 10 general, two women and a minority reserved seats. Similarly, ANP was holding nine seats including seven general and two women reserved seats. The PPP secured four general seats and one woman reserved seat swelling its total number to five in KP house.
Heavy contingent of police personnel were deployed for the assembly session, while special passes were issued to media and guests. Later, the Speaker Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani adjourned the proceedings of the house till 11:00 A.M of today (Thursday) where the election of leader of House and leader of the opposition would be announced. It is to mention here that Mahmood Khan was nominated by the PTI's leadership for the slot of Chief Minister KP and leader of the House.
