The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly Thursday elected PTI's candidate Mahmood Khan as 22nd Chief Minister (CM) of the province. The proceedings of the provincial assembly began with Speaker, Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani, in the chair. However, due to the absence of some members the process was delayed which angered Nighat Yasmin Orakzai of PPP.
As per rules the Speaker announced the division of the house and the supporters of both candidates were asked to their specified lobby to cast vote in favour of their favourite candidate. After division of the house a head count was started in which Mahmood Khan secured 77 votes while his rival Mian Nisar Gul obtained 33 votes.
Mahmood Khan belongs to Tehsil Matta of Swat district. He got his early education from a government school in Khawaza Khaila. He completed his matriculation and intermediate from Peshawar Public School. He has MSc degree in Agriculture Science from the Agricultural University Peshawar.
He started his political career in 2005 with election as Union Council Nazim from his native area of Tehsil Matta, Swat. The area is known for producing top quality apples, peaches and plumb. He joined PTI in 2012 and contested the general elections of 2013 on the ticket of PTI and won and was inducted in the Pervez Khattak led provincial cabinet as minister for irrigation.
Addressing on the occasion the Chief Minister-elect Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan thanked the members for reposing trust upon him and said that he would continue to work for the supremacy of law, merit and transparency in the province.
