The challenge of corruption - I

Business Recorder op-ed writer M Ziauddin in one of his articles "Curbing sources of corruption" had argued that "the practice of granting development funds amounting to billions every year to the elected members of parliament and provincial assemblies has over the years become one of the biggest sources of corruption. Most of these allocations are siphoned off regularly by these legislators with only a trickle reaching the grounds. In fact, many of these so-called 'electables' and their colleagues contest elections spending millions if not billions hoping to recoup the investment with a huge margin of profit from these annual grants of development funds."
It is quite sad that the writer, who is a senior political and economic commentator, seems to have ignored the fact that there have been numerous politicians in all the governments and opposition parties who have successfully and determinedly steered clear of corruption or corrupt practices. Just because some politicians turned out to be rotten scoundrels doesn't mean that we should paint all politicians with the same brush.
