High treason case against Musharraf: Secretary interior summoned on August 29
The Special Court on Monday summoned secretary interior on August 29 for not producing former Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf (retd) before the court. The Special Court, comprising Chief Justice Lahore High Court Yawar Ali and Justice Nazar Akbar of Sindh High Court, heard the high treason case against General Musharraf (retd).
The court inquired why the lead prosecutor Akram Sheikh is not present in the court. If he had not to appear then he should have informed the court by giving an application. The court was informed that Akram Sheikh is ill and having treatment abroad. It was further told that he had tendered resignation and sent it to the Ministry of Interior. "Musharraf's life is in danger," he added. "There had been two attempts on his life: once in the Islamabad court and the other in Quetta during the Akbar Bugti case hearing," the court was informed.
Justice Yawar Ali then inquired where the accused Pervez Musharraf is and why he is not appearing before the court. Musharraf's counsel Akhtar Shah informed that his client wants to appear but he should be provided presidential security, adding his client will appear when security arrangement would be made.
Justice Nazar said that non-bailable arrest warrants of Pervez Musharraf had been issued, adding it is the responsibility of the government to provide him security. He asked the counsel, "You want to say that unless security is provided to Musharraf, he will not appear."
When Akhtar Shah gave irrelevant arguments, Justice Yar told him to focus on his case. He said the accused has to give his statement under Section 342 of CrPc. The judge further inquired from the counsel whether the permission had been granted to him to appear in this case. Akhtar Shah replied that he was allowed to represent the accused in this case along with Barrister Farough Naseem and Faisal Chaudhry.
Akhtar Shah said that Musharraf's mother has filed an application that her pension has been stopped. He said that she was getting her husband's pension but now she is not getting it. The bench said they would take up this petition later on. Later, the case was adjourned until August 29.
Musharraf is facing the high treason case for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007 and he was indicted by the special court on March 31, 2014. In March 2016, he left the country for Dubai for "medical treatment" and hasn't returned since then.
