The Eidul Azha ended on Friday leaving the citizens to brave stench of animals' offal lying unattended in different parts of the city. The civic agencies including Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) seem incapable to ensure early disposal of animal waste from the city neighbourhoods, causing serious threat to human health.
Residents of various areas, including Korangi, Landhi, Malir, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e- Iqbal, Soldier Bazar, Baldia Town, Banaras, and Lyari etc, have expressed serious health concerns over the improper cleanliness conditions which have emerged after the mega religious event.
But, some others believe that public is equally responsible and behind the city's deteriorating situation. They said majority of people are used to dumping their animal's offal and waste on open roads, empty plots, and street corners instead of dumping the same at designated locations. They feared that this ill practice would put the people's life at risk.
On the other hand, the SSWMB said that it has disposed over 31,836 tonnes of animal offal from the city during the three days of Eid. A detailed SSWMB's statement said that the board's Managing Director Saeed Ahmad Mangicho paid visits of different collection points to review the arrangement activities. It said some 31,836 tonnes of sacrificial animal waste was lifted from the parts of city and the same was disposed into trenches at landfill sites.
As many as 55 collection points were set up in East, West, South, and Malir districts, wherefrom the offal was transported to various trenches by dumper loaders. A total 18,879 tonnes of offal was disposed into trench in Jam Chakro landfill site. Similarly, around 10,311 tonnes of waste was buried in Gond Pass trench, while around 2,646 tonnes of offal was disposed in Sharafi Goth GTS Trenches.
Sources said the Mayor's recent meeting with concerned civic agencies regarding the joint plan for disposal of waste could not yield any fruitful results as they are not cooperating with each other to work for the post Eid cleanliness of the city. They feared the piles of animal waste and garbage is engendering severe health issues to the citizens.
