No plasma alcohol found in Sharjeel's blood: report

The medical report suggested on Tuesday that the blood samples collected from the ailing PPP leader Sharjeel did not contain plasma alcohol.
According to the test's report released by Aga Khan Medical University Hospital, the blood samples of Sharjeel Memon did not contain traces of plasma alcohol and ethanol. The report will be forwarded to the apex court. The medical examination was conducted after recovery of liquor bottles in the room of Sharjeel at a private hospital that was declared sub-jail and where Chief Justice of Pakistan had paid a surprise visit to see him, some days back.
His blood samples were taken and the same were sent to a private hospital for pathological examination, while the room was sealed. Following the raid and examination, Memon was shifted to Karachi's Central Prison.
The report, a copy of which was available with Business Recorder clearly states "This is only a screening test. Results are only for medical (i.e. treatment proposes) unconfirmed screening results must not be used for non-medical purpose (e.g. employment testing or legal testing)"
Sharjeel, former provincial information minister, is an under trial accused of financial corruption and was admitted to a private hospital in Clifton that was declared a sub-jail.
The 3-member investigation team of police has started collecting evidence of liquor bottles recovery. It has got closed circuit television (CCTV) footages and records of Sharjeel's visitors at the hospital. The Boat Basin police had registered the case against Memon, his driver and two servants under Section 4 (possessing intoxicant) of the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order 1979.
SSP South Omar Shahid Hamid had told the media that bottles of liquor and other things recovered from the room would be sent to a forensic lab for chemical examination. He said the jail authorities would have to explain how these things got into the room. Hamid said CCTV footage and other evidence have been collected.
He said it was the responsibility of security guards to check the people visiting Sharjeel Memon.
It was reported earlier that the bottles of alcohol seized from the PPP leader's room were expensive and of foreign origin. Meanwhile, a court on Sunday sent three suspects to prison on judicial remand in a case pertaining to recovery of the bottles of liquor from Sharjeel's room in the hospital that was declared a sub-jail.
