The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Wednesday thoroughly discussed problems pertaining to getting succession certificate and sought more details on it from National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and other relevant departments. The meeting of the committee was held here in the Parliament House with Senator Javed Abbasi in the chair.
The committee discussed the proposal of a piece of legislation for provision of simple mechanism, in order to address the miseries and difficulties of common citizens in obtaining succession certificate. The committee members also discussed other related matters to the succession certificate which included declaring the family tree prepared by the NADRA as succession certificate and objections, if any, can be filed in the court of law subsequently.
The committee held a detailed discussion on the matter while officials of both the Ministry of Law and Justice and the NADRA gave their opinion on the matter.
The committee decided that there is a need to take cognizance of all the aspects and specifically the problems being faced by the people while obtaining succession certificate.
The committee chairman directed the quarters concerned to submit a detailed report on the matter by studying both the aspects of making amendment in the existing succession act and the decision to shift the responsibility to NADRA.
The committee also directed the NADRA and the ministry officials to take into consideration the international best practices. Different government bills which included the Federal Judicial Academy (Amendment) Bill, 2018, the Limitation Relating to Civil Revisions Bill, 2018, the Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2018, the Federal Ombudsman Institutional Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2018, the Specific Relief (amendment) Bill, 2018 and the Succession (Amendment) Bill were also considered by the committee and necessary directions were given to the Law and Justice Ministry.
