President-elect Dr Arif Alvi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will take oath today (Sunday) as the 13th President of Pakistan, as five years' tenure of outgoing President Mamnoon Hussain completed on Saturday. Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar will administrate the oath to newly-elected President Dr Arif Alvi.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, parliamentarians, military authorities and ambassadors of various countries will attend the oath-taking ceremony. According to the Presidency spokesperson, the guests will be served with tea and biscuits at the ceremony. Five years' tenure of Mamnoon Hussain as President has expired on Saturday. At a special ceremony, Mamnoon was given a farewell guard of honor by a smartly turned-out contingent of the Armed Forces. The outgoing President also inspected the guard of honor.
Dr Alvi won the presidential election on Tuesday last by securing 353 votes in the electoral college of national and provincial assemblies and Senate. Mamnoon, while speaking during his farewell meeting with officers and staff of President House, said, "The development and prosperity of the country lie in the rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution."
He said he was leaving the Presidency after completing his term with full satisfaction. "I left no stone unturned in fulfilling the responsibilities given to me by the people of Pakistan," he said. "During my tenure, I strictly remained within my constitutional limits and powers," he said. Mamnoon also thanked his staff for their cooperation in fulfillment of his official duties in an amicable manner.
