Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has alleged that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is further pushing the country towards economic crisis instead of pulling it out of it. Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Sherry Rehman expressed these views while talking to mediapersons after chairing an internal meeting of the Senate Special Committee on the Project of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on Wednesday. She said that hundreds of people have lost money in the stock market crash brought about by the PTI government due to uncertainty in the country.
She said that the dollar has taken a wing, gas prices are going through the roof but no economic plan has been presented by those who used to criticize the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans daily. He said now the PTI government has approached the IMF for a bailout package while it had promised to the nation that it will not obtain foreign loans.
"There is uncertainty and confusion in the country. The market is complete in chaotic situation," she said. Answering a question, she said that PPP would participate in the joint-sitting protest of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) members of Parliament along with other opposition parties outside the Gate No. 01 of Parliament House against the arrest of Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in Ashiana Housing scandal.
She said that the committee referred the matter regarding the security of the CPEC projects to Senate Standing Committee on Defense. The PPP senator said that internal meeting of Special Committee on CPEC prepared questions about the CPEC projects which would be raised in the next meeting. She said that the PTI government also talked about reviewing the CPEC projects. She said that the PTI government has created many ambiguities and confusions about the CPEC projects through its statements.
Earlier, Sherry Rehman while chairing an internal meeting of the Special Committee on the Project of CPEC said that even PC-1 of Western Route under CPEC has not been prepared so far. She said that the PTI government should take China into confidence and sit with Chinese government before changing the CPEC projects. "We are looking positively for both the countries," she said.
She also claimed that the PTI government did not accord warm welcome to the Chinese foreign minister when he arrived in Islamabad. The PPP leader said that the committee would also invite the Chinese ambassador to discuss the CPEC projects. Sherry Rehman said, "We are not against the investment of other countries in Pakistan under the CPEC. However, the PTI government should tell the committee about the strategy regarding to the investment of Saudi Arabia in Gwadar and other parts of the country." The government has to tell about the third country investment in Gwadar, she added.
Committee member Senator Kauda Babar said that China has made $33 billion investment in energy sector under the CPEC. He said that Pakistan obtained $5 billion concessional loans and $1 billion grant from China for infrastructure projects.
