Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif Wednesday made a phone call to Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to discuss the situation arising out of the abduction of Iranian guards from near about the Pakistan-Iran border point of Mirjaveh on October 16 the Foreign Office said.
According to Foreign Office spokesperson, Foreign Minister Qureshi expressed his serious concern on the incident and also briefed his Iranian counterpart about the active efforts launched by the Pakistani law enforcement agencies to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing Iranian guards in coordination with the Iranian military and intelligence counterparts.
"It was noted that the two director generals (military operations) were in close contact through hotline to coordinate the search and rescue efforts including enhanced air surveillance and troops' deployment in the border area where the incident took place," the spokesperson said.
He further said Qureshi also stated that such incidents are the handy work of common enemies who are unhappy with the existing close and friendly relations between Pakistan and Iran. "Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment of not allowing anyone to succeed in such malicious efforts, Foreign Minister Qureshi noted that Pakistan and Iran have traditionally share a 'border of peace and friendship' which would be maintained in the same spirit," he said.
Thanking the foreign minister, Javad Zarif underscored Iran's desire to overcome all hurdles jointly with Pakistan in maintaining complete peace along the Pak-Iran border, the spokesperson added.
Iranian media Tuesday reported that 14 border troops had been kidnapped by an armed group at a border post in the city of Mirjaveh in Sistan-Baluchestan province which was followed by calling Pakistan's ambassador Riffat Masood in Tehran to the minister of foreign affairs of Iran, urging her Pakistan's cooperation in securing the freedom of the abducted Iranian border guards.
