It is interesting to note that the PTI government has decided to carry out the audit of all "non-transparent" LNG deals cut by its predecessor PML-N government. The irony however is that the government appears to be ill-prepared to do this job in any effective and meaningful manner. There are some reasons for such scepticism. Firstly, the government has not come up with any roadmap with regard to dealing with a host of economic challenges facing the country. Going to the IMF was inevitable from the day one; however, this government dithered or showed unnecessary reluctance in this regard. Secondly, it has no clear plan to deal with circular debt challenges. It has yet to come up with any viable plan with the state-owned enterprises bleeding the national exchequer.
While it is going to complete its first 100 days in the office in the next few weeks, it inspires little or no confidence. Honesty is a highly desirable virtue, but one cannot ignore the profundity of competence as well. The PTI government must not force people to choose between corruption and competence.
