A large number of employees of Utility Stores Corporation Monday staged a sit-in here at D-Chowk against the expected closure and privatisation of USC. The USC employees gathered at their head office in Blue Area and marched towards D-Chowk. The protesters tried to proceed towards the Parliament House, but the police stopped them. The protesting USC employees were holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the closure of outlets across the country.
Heavy contingent of police was deployed on the occasion to avert any untoward incident. They also demanded the government that their services be regularised and salaries be increased. They said that the utility stores throughout the country will remain closed from today (October 22) onward till the fulfilment of their demands. The present government is not providing relief to the poor, they said.
They also urged the government to settle subsidy claims of the USC pending for the last seven years, which is creating a financial crunch for the Corporation.
They threatened that they would march towards the Parliament House if their demands are not fulfilled. They said that they would continue their sit-in till their demands are met. Advisor to Prime Minister, Naeemul Haque started negotiations with the protesting employees.
