The Supreme Court on Saturday ordered the joint team, comprising members of various government agencies to remove the encroachment from metropolis in fifteen-days by giving the task to Mayor Karachi to clear the city of the encroachment.
A larger bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar hearing the case of encroachment and illegal occupation of government lands in Karachi ruled that joint team should go ahead for the task after it didn't require any one else permission in the presence of court' orders.
Additional IG Police Amir Sheikh assured the court that police would extend complete assistance to the joint team for removal of encroachment when CJP sought the plan from the police for its role in removal of encroachment in the city.
During the hearing of the case, Mayor Karachi Wasim Akthar told the court that seventy percent of the area in Empress Market has been cleared by removing the encroachment. Justice Nisar, however, directed to remove the encroachment from the surrounding areas of the Empress Market as well.
The Mayor Karachi assured the court that Saddar Area of the city would be cleared completely from encroachment. The CJP stated that footpaths of the area should be completely retrieved from encroachers and directed Ranges and Cantonment Boards to also extend their cooperation in this regard by dealing the law & order situation, if arose during the removal operation of encroachment.
The Chief Justice ordered that alternate places should be provided to welfare organizations, who provide free meals to poor persons if they are also targeted during the operation when Mayor Karachi sought the court's directions in this connection.
Meanwhile, a high-level meeting chaired by Justice Gulzar Ahmed of SC deliberated upon the occupation of 35, 000 amenity plots in Karachi. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Sindh, Director General Karachi Development Authority, Municipal Commissioner KMC and others officials. Justice Gulzar directed to remove the occupation from the lands specified for parks and observed that concerned departments have to work effectively to restore the original face of Karachi.
Chief Secretary Sindh sadi that plan has been worked out to remove the encroachment from the parks and all concerned departments would fully cooperate in this regard. Meanwhile, taking up the case of shifting of oil tankers to Zaulfiqarabad Terminal, the Supreme Court sought the report within two-week after CJP inquired why the oil tankers can't be shifted from Shireen Jinnah Colony to Zaulfiqarabad Terminal.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar directed the Mayor Karachi, the Commissioner Karachi and Oil Tankers Association to sit together to find out the solution for shifting of oil tankers to the terminal. Sindh Governemnt's attorney told the court that terminal is available for the oil tankers coming from Balochistan to Karachi. Oil tankers Association assured the court that it would be activated in fifteen days.
Hearing the case about killing of child Mir Afzal in Khairpur, the CJP showed his annoyance over the delay in completion of inquiry into the murder case and reprimanded Home Secretary Sindh and SSP Khairpur. The court ordered to submit the inquiry report in three days and ruled to take severe action against the responsible officials, if the court orders were not complied with in stipulated time frame.
