The main round of the World Scrabble Championship came to a close on Saturday with the completion of 35 matches here at Torquay, England. Nigel Richards of New Zealand maintained his supremacy by finishing on top in the A division. He was four games clear of the nearest rival. Nigel finished with 29 wins.
Top 8 players will now meet up for the quarter finals. Moiz Baig of Pakistan who climbed up to the 3rd position on day three finally succumbed to fatigue at he has been playing nonstop for 7 days. A visibly tired Moiz dropped out of the race for the quarter finals on the last day.
Waseem Khatri who was also in the reckoning fell short and finished 18th in the toughest field of scrabble players. The division B story began with Pakistan, continued with Pakistan and ended with Pakistan. Hammad Hadi Khan played like a champion to end the main rounds in the first position with 27 wins and a spread of 3069.
Young Sohaib Sanaullah continued to give him tough competition and finished on the same number of wins. Astonishingly 7 of the 8 quarter finalists are from Pakistan! This is a unique feat never witnessed in the history of scrabble. Timothy Lawrence of England just managed to sneak in preventing an all Pakistan show.-PR
