A sharp increase in prices of pulses, chicken meat, sugar, vegetable and other daily use food items, was witnessed during this week as compared preceding week in wholesale and retail markets, said in a survey carried out Business Recorder here on Sunday.
Wholesalers and traders in provincial capital Peshawar have attributed that the prices of pulses and others essential food commodities have increased manifold during the last few days due to the recent hike in petroleum products, devaluation of local currency against the dollar, couple with imposition of new taxes by the government. They said the prices may further increase in coming days, if the depreciation of local currency was continued against the dollar in the inter bank market.
Price of a 49-kilogram sac of Dal masoor has jumped at Rs 4,000/ in wholesale market, against the previous rate of 3,000, showing an increase Rs 1000 per bag, the survey noticed. It added that an increase of Rs 500 to 600/ in 49 kilogram sac of good quality rice (sela) was registered in wholesale, as available at Rs 6,500 and Rs 7,000 against the price of Rs 6,000 in the previous week. Rs 500 to 800 per 49 kilogram sac of toota rice increased in wholesale market, as available at Rs 3,500 and Rs 4,000.
A sharp increase in wholesale rate of red bean was also witnessed as 49 kilogram bag is being available at Rs 7,000/ which was selling at Rs 5,500/ per sac a few days back, the survey noted. Dhoti dal rate has also touched new peak in wholesale market, as 49 kilogram sac available at Rs 4,600 against the previous rate of Rs 3,000 per 49 kg sac. The survey further said that a 49 kilogram sac of dal channa is being sold within range of Rs 5,000 and Rs 5,700 depends on their quality. Moong is being sold at Rs 4,200 per 49 kg bag in wholesale market, while white lobiya priced at Rs 4,000 per 49 kg bag. Similarly, the dal chilka (green) is being sold within range of at Rs 4,000 and Rs 4,300 per 49 kg bag in wholesale market while dal chilka (black) available at 6,500 and Rs 7,000 per 49 kg sac.
White big size channa is being sold within range of Rs 4400, Rs 4900 and Rs 5,200 - Rs 6200 per 49-kilogram bag, the survey noted. It added that a five kilogram red meva is being sold at Rs 900 in wholesale market, the survey said. An increase of Rs 300 per in 49-kilogram sac of sugar has registered in wholesale market as available at Rs 2600.
The prices of cooking/ghee have also increased in both wholesale and retail markets, packet of ghee is available within range from Rs 2580 upto Rs 3,000 in wholesale market, while cooking oil available from Rs 2080 upto Rs 3,000.
According to the survey, the rate of chicken meat has also increased at Rs 182 per kilogram, which was selling at Rs 167 per kilogram in retail market. A dozen of farm eggs are being sold at Rs 120 and Rs 130. Cow meat is being sold at Rs 300-400 and Rs 450 per kilogram, while mutton beef priced at Rs 700-750 per kilogram in retail market.
The survey said that the prices of vegetable have also remained high-side in retail market. New red potatoes are being sold at Rs 80 and Rs 90 per kilogram, while others at Rs 40 per kilogram in the retail market. Tomatoes are being sold at Rs 30 per kilogram. Onion priced at Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kilogram, the survey said. It added that a one-kilogram ginger was available at Rs 240 while Chinese garlic priced at Rs 150 per kilogram while locally produced garlic being sold at Rs 60 per kilogram in retail market.
The survey noticed that price of peas had come down at Rs 100 per kilogram against the rate of Rs 250 per kilogram in the previous week. Ladyfinger is being sold at Rs 70 per kilogram, arvi at Rs 50 per kilogram, Cauliflower at Rs 60 per kilogram, cabbage at Rs 50 per kilogram. Lemon is being sold at Rs 80 per kg, green chili available at Rs 70 per kg, capsicum at Rs 60 per kilogram. Likewise, Apple gourd, bottle gourd and ridge gourd prices range between Rs 50-60 per kg in retail market, while bringle at Rs 40 per kilogram.
