A meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) has approved, in principle, inclusion of RLNG power plants in the privatisation list and constitution of task forces at federal and provincial levels to devise plan to deal with the challenge of rapid growth in population.
A meeting of the CCI presided by Prime Minister Imran Khan Monday included RLNG facilities - 1,230 MW Haveli Bahadur Shah and 1,223 MW Balloki owned by National Power Parks Management Company Ltd (NPPMCL) - in the active list of privatisation plan for early implementation.
The meeting also emphasised the need for greater focus on renewable energy in existing energy mix to lessen the cost of power.
An official said that issue of energy mix came under discussion in the context of cost and its impact on the economy during the meeting of the CCI.
The CCI decided to constitute national and provincial task forces, to be headed by the Prime Minister at the national level and by the respective chief ministers at the provincial levels, following in-depth discussion on the challenge of rapid population growth of 2.4 percent annually in the country. The meeting also decided that process of establishment of task forces will be completed in 48 hours, given the criticality of the issue.
The task forces to be constituted at the national and provincial levels will consider the recommendations made by the task force constituted earlier on the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and will submit a comprehensive action plan to the CCI, taking into account the future implementation strategy of the action plan, financial aspects and other issues relating to garnering support of all segments of society for the success of a comprehensive population control programme.
There was a complete consensus among the participants to place greater focus on further improving ease of doing business in the country in order to attract investments and promote industry for realising the export potential of the country.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Dr Fehmida Mirza, Minister for Finance Asad Umer, Minister for Law and Justice Dr Muhammad Farogh Naseem, Minister for Privatisation Muhammad Mian Soomro, Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan, Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan, Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce and Industry Abdul Razzak Dawood, federal and provincial secretaries and other senior officials.
