The poorly executed anti-encroachment drive has widely created a vehicular traffic chaos for citizens as tonnes of debris of the razed shop sites sprawls all around the demolished sites in the city. Moreover, the Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar expressed his inability to lift the wreckage owing to 'monetary' constrains, urging the Sindh Government to provide financial assistance for the resources-starved civic body, for the very task.
"I have requested the CM to provide machinery or funds for the lifting of the debris from the demolished sites, I hope he will support us," the Mayor told media. Media Director KMC Bashir Sadozai told Business Recorder that the civic body has moved a summary to the provincial government requesting allocation of a special grant in its annual budget for the removal of debris.
The anti-encroachment drive will remain continue. The debris will continue to sprawl at parts of the city if immediate lifting arrangements are not made immediately. KMC machinery is engaged and has removed thousands of tonnes of wreckages from Lyari Khadda Market, Burnes Road, and Empress Market etc..
He hoped that the provincial government, being one of the stakeholders of KMC in the ongoing anti-encroachment operation, would consider the request, with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, the citizens complained that the civic authorities have abandoned the debris of structures that has not only created hardships for the pedestrians, but also caused vehicular traffic chaos at various city neighbourhoods. The anti-encroachment drive has been initiated in compliance with the Supreme Court orders.
Meanwhile, KMC On Wednesday removed encroachments from district Malir, Mehran Highway, Koranig No.4 Mobile Market, Korangi No.5, from footpath in L-5 sector North Karachi and health club. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman is monitoring all actions against encroachments in the city. He said the KMC and other organisations are also busy in operation at Juna Market and Joria Bazar. He advised shopkeepers to remove their belongings from footpaths and roads or these will be seized by the anti-encroachment department.
