Minister for Power Division Omar Ayub Khan on Wednesday informed the National Assembly that the government is installing at least 3,000 Aerial Bundled Cables in the high-risk areas to curb electricity theft and direct hooking in electricity cables.
Answering to different questions during the Question Hour, Omar Ayub Khan said that installation of the Aerial Bundled Cables would be completed by December 31, 2019 along with various other technological measures to curb the electricity theft.
The minister said that around 66 percent of the transmission system is in need of an urgent revamp as the electricity over 19,500 megawatts cannot be transmitted currently. He said the government is also improving the system in the IESCO and LESCO with a $400 million funding through Asian Development Bank. There is an annual electricity theft of worth Rs 250 billion in power distribution companies and the government is planning to check it, he said. The minister also revealed that at least 27 percent of the country's population, or 50 million people, are not connected to the grid and the government is trying to explore the off-grid solutions for them.
