Sindh Agriculture Minister Muhammad Ismail Rahu has claimed that seven sugar mills have began cane crushing while 15 others started boilers for sugar production in Sindh.
The provincial government is making all out efforts to ensure the procurement of cane on fixed rate and implementation on Sugar Mills Act in letter and spirit for which Cane Commissioner Sindh has been engaged round the clock monitoring of the process, the minister said. Talking to media persons here at the office of the Director General Research Sindh at Agriculture University Tando Jam, the minister said that the provincial government was duty bound to implement the orders of the court accordingly and on the directives of the Supreme Court, the government would initiate action against grabbing of land. Responding to a question, the minister said that Pakistan Peoples Party fully believed in the democratic norms and always ready to extend support all such efforts which would be better for the country, people and the democracy. Similarly, the PPP will oppose the anti-democratic moves and conspiracies against the people and the democracy, he added.
Responding to a question about the construction of dams, the minister replied that PPP has clear policy in this regard. "We have objection on the construction of Kala Bag Dam because it is a controversial issue as not only Sindh, the other province had also rejected it", he said and added that according to Water Accord 1991, release of 10 MAF from downstream of the barrage is necessary. He said according to research, the sea intruded 1.8 million acres land of Sujawal and Badin districts due to no release of water from the downstream of the Indus River. As a result of water shortage, the Kharif and Rabih crops have badly affected in Sindh, he said and added that due to increase in prices of fertilizers and gas, the agriculture of the province received negative impacts.
