Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) parliamentary party Wednesday condemned the alleged "political victimisation" of its central leadership and vowed to block proceedings of the National Assembly if production order for Khawaja Saad Rafique is not issued.
The joint parliamentary party meeting of members of National Assembly and Senate of the PML-N was chaired by PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif who is also under the custody of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and attending the National Assembly's session on production order issued by Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser.
The meeting adopted a resolution, condemning the alleged political victimisation of the party leadership, arrest of Khawaja Saad Rafique, his brother Salman Rafique and offloading Hamza Shahbaz from a plane, skyrocketing price hike, inflation, the government's decision of closure of CNG stations and the depreciation of rupee against dollar.
In his address, Shahbaz told the party's parliamentarians that there is a hard time for the party and the leadership, urging them not to be discouraged through such tactics aimed at victimisation. "There is indeed a hard time, but I believe we will succeed," he said.
He referred to the arrest of Saad Rafique and his brother Salman Rafique by the NAB on Tuesday last, saying that it is part of the ongoing campaign against the party and its leaders, adding that the NAB is being used against the opposition. He said that the NAB has also issued notice to Maryam Aurangzeb on an anonymous application which is aimed at silencing the party spokesperson who, he said, is defending the party effectively.
"Maryam Aurangzeb is among the active leaders while Saad Rafique worked day and night to put the Railways on the track. Salman Rafique was part of my cabinet in Punjab and I know he is sincere and a gentleman who worked sincerely in my team," Shahbaz further told the audience.
He also maintained that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have been facing the accountability court's proceedings and appeared before the courts more than anybody else in the country's political history.
Referring to the PML-N government's electricity projects, the PML-N president claimed that the former prime minister brought an end to the load shedding and pulled Pakistan out of the darkness for ever.
He said that other than the projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the PML-N government installed power projects with generation capacity of 5000MW and saved Rs 160 billion of the national exchequer.
"Nawaz Sharif is being punished for serving the nation. His previous tenure was the best term in the country's history," he further maintained.
Shehbaz Sharif also told the party's parliamentarians about NAB's ongoing investigations against him, saying that he has been providing details of each and every project of his term in the past 62 days in the NAB custody.
Earlier in the day, Nawaz Sharif also met Shehbaz Sharif at the Ministers' Enclave where his residence has been turned into a sub-jail. The party sources said that Nawaz Sharif remained with him for over an hour and discussed the prevailing political situation and the future course of action.
