Former Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) Member National Assembly, Ali Raza Abidi was shot dead in an armed attack at the upscale Defence vicinity of the metropolis Tuesday night. According to police, the incident occurred outside his home located in Khayaban-e-Ittehad when armed men opened multiple fires as Abidi got off his vehicle, and fled the scene, leaving the former MNA in a pool of blood.
The victim was rushed to a private hospital by his father riding the same vehicle, where he succumbed to his injuries. "The incident seems to be a targeted attack, however investigations are under way to ascertain the fact," DIG South Javed Alam Odho said. IG Sindh, Syed Kalim Imam taking notice of the incident has sought report from DIG South. The empty jackets of 30 bore pistols were found at the scene.
The fresh 'targeted' incident is second in a week as two workers of Pak Sarzameen Party were shot dead by armed men in Rizvia Society last Sunday. The FIR was registered against MQM founder Altaf Hussain.
SSP South told media that Abidi was shot in the head and neck as soon as he got off his car outside his home.
Heavy continent of Rangers and police reached Abidi's house and cordoned off the area.
Abidi had tendered his resignation in September from MQM-P's basic membership citing "personal reasons".
Abidi was elected as Member National Assembly from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) platform from NA-251 (Karachi-XIII) in general elections 2013, securing some 81,603 votes defeating Raja Azhar Khan, a candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Earlier, in the evening, Abidi criticized the sitting regime in a tweet.
"The counter press conference by PTI is just a repetition of what they have been alleging for the past 5 years on the container. Nothing new nor substantial in reply to PML-N's presser, except that now PTI is officially speaking on behalf of NAB courts," reads the tweet.
Earlier this month, six people were wounded when a low-intensity blast hit MQM's Eid-e-Milad gathering in Gulistan-e-Johar.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah taking notice of the killing of ex-MNA directed the police chief to submit a report.
