Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah on Sunday warned that any attempt to arrest party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari could plunge the country into chaos as people would take to the streets against his arrest. "A lot of courage is needed to arrest a popular leader such as Bilawal. Although it seems not possible but nothing certain can be said about this government," he said, talking to journalists, here. Shah accused Prime Minister Imran Khan of creating uncertainty and a crisis-like situation in the country in the name of so-called accountability which he called selective accountability.
He further blamed Imran Khan for having done nothing but arrest of opposition politicians. In what appeared a veiled reference to powerful establishment's alleged meddling in politics, PPP stalwart said Khan was being asked to do things which no other politician would do.
"There is no need for in-house change in Sindh because the cases have been made on the basis of assumptions," he said, ruling out the possibility of imposition of governor's rule in the province.
Khursheed said there is no place for governor's rule in the constitution. He said governor rule can only be imposed through martial law and its enforcement is not possible even in a worse democracy.
"The constitution provides a guarantee of a strong federation and the country's security will be in jeopardy if the constitution is altered," he argued, adding that Governor's rule would not be better.
He alleged that efforts are being made to bring a one-party system in the country. "It seems as if the country is heading towards a civilian martial law. The way politics is being done nowadays it seems like one party is being strengthened while others are being weakened," he said.
The PPP leader claimed that mandate of people had not brought PTI chairman to power; rather, he was brought into power and that everyone is aware of how he made it to the power corridor. "Imran Khan is trying to hide his incompetence through frivolous activities. He [Imran] does not want anyone to question him about the promises he made," Shah said.
