Expressing disappointment over negligence in the education sector, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday said that no nation can make progress without promotion of education. While addressing a ceremony of the Lahore Institute of Health Sciences here on Saturday, Saqib Nisar said that education is the foundation of good governance but the literacy rate is alarmingly low in Pakistan.
The Chief Justice said that education and health are basic rights and needs of the people and stressed upon the people to avoid making these noble sectors businesses. "I often wonder, how nations evolve and prosper," he said. "Serving humanity is the best cause. No nation can prosper without education."
He said it is painful that feudal lords have occupied several government-run schools in Sindh where they have locked up herds of stray cattle and cows. "Even there are many schools with no availability of potable water and teachers," he said terming it "an unfortunate situation".
Regarding education in Balochistan, he said that in rural areas of the province there were no education institutions at all. "Life is nothing if people's fundamental rights and liberty were not secured," he added, and in this regard courts "have to play a critical role". He further highlighted importance of sincere leadership and said that it was required for the country to excel.
