Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissing the Sindh government's appeal seeking administrative control of three major Karachi hospitals from federation, wrapped up the case. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar announcing the judgment, stated that the control of the port city's major government-run hospital would remain with the federal government. The short order was read out by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.
Justice Nisar had observed that there was no legal bar on the federal government from establishing hospitals in the provincial territory, adding that location was not relevant in this regard. The reasons behind the ruling would be listed in a detailed judgment later, Justice Nisar said.
The Sindh government had approached the Supreme Court with the claim that since the subject of health had been devolved to provinces under the 18th Amendment, the management of the hospitals namely the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College (JPMC), National Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases (NICVD) and National Institute of Child Health (NICH) should rest with it.
