Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar on Wednesday said the PTI-led government has made big achievement by saving the country from default. "When the PTI government came into power, the biggest threat was of default, which has been tackled with the help of friendly countries like Saudi Arabia, China, UAE and others," he said while talking to a select group of media personnel, here at the Governor House on Wednesday. The governor maintained that the PTI government has set three targets, i.e., tackling economic challenge, making no compromise on corruption and holding accountable to all.
He said that the government has addressed the economic challenge of default and is pursuing a long-term strategy to tackle the other manifold challenges. "We do not believe in short-term solution and thus we are following business-like approach to deal with challenges," he said. When asked about appreciation in the dollar's worth, the governor said that confidence of the people has shaken with the upward trend of the greenback.
"We are working with sincerity to revive the national economy," he said, adding: "Business activities would increase significantly in times to come." He said that the government is striving to strengthen the institutions. "There will be no compromise on corruption and corrupt practices," he said. He added that gas tariff has been reduced and businesses would be facilitated in real sense. He further said that policies will be framed in consultation with the businessmen. "We have strong commitment and would steer the country out of crises under the leadership of Imran Khan," he said. To a query, Sarwar who played key role in giving GSP Plus status to Pakistan said that the country's exports has increased to US 15 billion dollars and they would double this figure.
When asked about the health of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in Kot Lakhpat prison, after conviction in a reference by an accountability court, said: "I wish good health to Nawaz Sharif and the government would fulfill its obligation in this regard." Answering a question about alleged differences between the PTI and PML-Q, the governor said that the PTI had entered into alliance with the PML-Q before 2018 general elections; such alliances continue and there is no threat whatsoever to this alliance.
When asked about Indian attitude after the announcement of Kartarpur border, the governor, who recently visited abroad, said that the Indian attitude is negative but the Sikh community is delighted with Pakistan and PM Imran Khan.
He said that as per estimates, millions of people are dying due to contaminated water. "Majority of patients in hospitals are victims of water born diseases. Sarwar Foundation has installed water filtration plants in police lines. About 205 police personnel are carrier of hepatitis," he added.
The governor, who is the Chancellor of Universities in Punjab, said that all chancellors have been directed to convert their respective university on solar, ensure provision of clean drinking water and save every drop of water.
He further said that a strategy is being evolved to reduce the number of patients of TB and hepatitis. "About 150 filtration plants will be installed across the province with foreign funding. The PTI government would achieve the target of provision of clean drinking water in five years," he added.
