Two people were reported to have died Thursday during a crush at an election campaign rally for President Muhammadu Buhari in northeast Nigeria, the presidency said.
Buhari's aide, Bashir Ahmad, said two people had died "as a result of overcrowding" at the event in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state.
There was no official confirmation from local authorities but Buhari said he felt "profound sadness over the loss of lives" and sent his condolences to the victims' families.
His main challenger in the February 16 vote, Atiku Abubakar, said he too was "saddened at the loss of lives.
"All lives matter," Abubakar said. The deaths came just weeks after several people were injured at a Buhari rally in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, when a large covered platform fell on supporters.
