Vice-Chancellor Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Dr Zia-ul-Qayyum said that new state of the art administrative block will be constructed in the main campus of the university in which offices of all the administrative departments will be established under one roof.
While talking to Business Recorder Zia-ul-Qayyum, who is the newly-appointed VC of Pakistan's biggest distance learning university said that not only infrastructure of main campus but infrastructure of regional centres will be improved also. He said that at present 44 regional centres are working all over the country.
He also said that big regional centres will be divided in to two parts. The executive council has given the approval of the division of big regional centres. There will be a uniform policy of posting transfer of staff in all the centres including main campus. He said that university is financially sound and he will take federal government on board for the implementation of policy, solution of the problems and for the removal of obstacles in the way of progress of university.
He further said that there is a need of bringing betterment in the whole higher education system including the system of AIOU. He said in higher education progress is not possible without adopting new technological techniques and it is difficult to cope with the new challenges of higher education without adopting modern and latest techniques.
He said that during his four years tenure he will try to change the negative perception of the distance learning by improving the examination system and by appointing tutors on the basis of their academic qualification as well as their professional experience in the relevant programme.
He also said that papers were sent in high security and in a transparent manner to whole country. However, he admitted that there is a need to bring more transparency in the examination system. He said during his four years tenure his focus will be quality not quantity.
He said that his focus will be on enhancing the quality of four years professional BS degrees programme, MPhil and PhD programmes. He also said new courses will be introduced according to the market demand. He said that he would try his level best to give quality education to 1.4 million students of the university.
The university exclusively focuses on enhancing female literacy ratio in the country so that women can perform their vital role in the process of national progress and development. The university takes same special initiatives for the underprivileged and marginalized segments of the society not only for their economic empowerment but also for poverty alleviation in the country.
