Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Jahangir Khan Tareen remained the highest taxpayer for the second consecutive year among the parliamentarians by paying Rs 97,317,272 in taxes followed by Senator Talha Mehmood of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) who paid Rs 43,183,565 during the Tax Year 2017.
According to the Parliamentarians Tax Directory for year ended on 30 June 2017, released by Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan as parliamentarian paid Rs 103,763 in taxes in 2017 compared to Rs 159,609 in 2016, showing a decrease of Rs 55,846.
Nawaz Sharif, when he was the prime minister paid a total of Rs 263,173 compared to Rs 2,524,213 in 2016, showing a decrease of Rs 2,261,040. Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah, the then leader of the opposition in National Assembly, paid a total of Rs 256,121 taxes compared to Rs 124,215 during 2016, marking a decline of Rs 131,906.
Jahangir Khan Tareen remained the top taxpayer for the second consecutive year, as he was also the highest taxpayer as parliamentarian during 2016 by paying Rs 53,677,426 and paid Rs 97,317,272 in taxes in the Tax Year 2017, showing an increase of Rs 43,639,846.
Among other top taxpayers included PPP's senator from Balochistan Rozi Khan Kakar with Rs 40,869,089; senator from erstwhile FATA Taj Mohammad Afridi Rs 29,343,435; MQM-P's Farogh Naseem Rs 27,887,974; PPP's Senator Aitzaz Ahsan Rs 25,869,738; PML-N's MNA Isphanyar M Bhandara Rs 22,959,458; PPP's Senator Farooq H Naek Rs 11,062,116; Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly and PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif Rs 10,296,518; and PML-N's MNA Sheikh Fayyaz Ud Din Rs 14,013,347.
PML-N's Ishaq Dar paid Rs 9,384,606 taxes as the then finance minister while the incumbent Finance Minister Asad Umar paid Rs 4,849,615 as member of the National Assembly during the tax year 2017.
President Dr Arif Ali paid a total of Rs 377,511 in taxes as parliamentarian who also paid Rs 1,429,043 tax as member of an AOP.
Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaisar paid tax of Rs 580,896 as Member of the KP Assembly.
Among the current cabinet members, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi paid a total of Rs 653,943 as member of the National Assembly, Sheikh Rashid Ahmad Rs 702,698, Shireen Mazari Rs 1,569,558; Ghulam Srwar Khan Rs 1,384,747; Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar Rs 475,573; Pervaiz Khattak Rs 927,515; Murad Saeed Rs 241,946; Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui Rs 138,573; Shafqat Mehmood Rs 24,030; Tariq Bashir Cheema Rs 235,768; Fehmida Mirza Rs 227,591; Ali Amin Khan Rs 84,500; Ali Muhammad Khan Mahar Rs 138,573 and Ali Muhammad Khan Rs 461,868.
Former chairman Senate Raza Rabbani paid Rs 605,954 in taxes and also paid Rs 742,202 tax as member of an AOP during the tax year 2017 while Deputy Speaker Senate Saleem Mandviwalla paid Rs 1,441,848 in taxes. Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha paid tax of Rs 265,100 for the tax year 2017.
In provincial assemblies, the following members remained the top taxpayers during the said period including JUI-F's member of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly Noor Saleem Malik Rs 15,736,750; PML-N's Hamza Shahbaz paid Rs 8,268,298, PML-N's chief minister of Balochistan Sardar Sanaullah Zehri Rs 10,100,750; PML-N member of KP Assembly Sardar Zahoor Ahmad Rs 14,320,390; PML-N member of Punjab Assembly Ch Arshad Javaid Warraich Rs 13,632,762; PPP's Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah paid Rs 710,789, and PTI's Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan paid Rs 287,652 tax.
