Police on Sunday lodged an FIR against two suspected robbers for killing a university student Nimra Baig, 21, during an alleged encounter with police here. The bereaved family, which has presumed that their daughter might have been hit by a bullet fired from a police gun instead of robbers', called for an impartial inquiry from the investigators over the incident.
SHO Sir Syed Police Station Ilyas Shah told Business Recorder that investigation have been initiated after registration of case No 85/2019 under sections pertaining to police encounter, murder, attempted murder and terrorism against two suspected robbers identified as Riaz son of Abdullah and Jumma son of Habib. SHO said the FIR has been filed on the complaint of an ASI Umar Khan posted at the Noorjahan police station.
The both accused had sustained bullet wounds during the encounter with police; however Riaz succumbed to his injuries while Jumma was being treated at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). "Medical Legal Officer of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has informed us that the victim girl sustained a low speed velocity weapon bullet that commonly being used by robbers," he said while rejecting the media reports that the girl was hit by a high speed velocity guns that normally refers to sub-machine guns possessed by law enforcers. When asked the family doubts that the girl was hit by a police bullet, SHO said an inquiry committee has been formed which will bring facts to light.
It must be mentioned here that the final year Dow University of Health Sciences student Nimrah was on her way to somewhere by an auto-rickshaw near Anda Mor in North Karachi when she was hit by bullets during a shootout between police and robbers on Friday.
She succumbed to her injuries on Saturday. It is yet to be ascertained whether she was hit by a bullet fired from a weapon of police or by the robbers'. She had sustained a bullet in her upper torso. She was laid to rest at a graveyard in North Karachi after her funeral prayers at Jama Masjid Siddiq Akbar.
Nimra's uncle while talking to media outside JPMC morgue said it seems she was hit by a police bullet, and called for an impartial inquiry of the incident. He also expressed disenchantment over the hospital administration for delaying to conduct medico-legal formalities on time.
