The prices of the essential kitchen items especially vegetables, pulses, live chicken/chicken meat, flour and sugar witnessed continuous upward trend in the retail market. A survey carried out by Business Recorder in local market on Sunday showed that prices of most of the essential kitchen basket including tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic, lemon, live chicken/chicken meat, cauliflower, cabbage and wheat flour registered increase in prices against last week.
It was observed in survey that retailers in different parts of the provincial metropolis Peshawar were charging different prices for the same items. For instance, good quality rice (sela) is being sold at Rs 150 per kilogramme, while the same quality rice available at Rs 140 per kilogramme in local market. Toota rice is being sold at Rs70 and Rs80 per kilogramme.
The survey noticed that big size white channa is being available at Rs 140 per kilogramme, while some shopkeepers are selling the same quality white channa at Rs 120 per kilogramme. Similarly, there is visible difference in prices dal mash as some vendors charging Rs 120 per kilogramme, while other Rs 140 per kilogramme in local market.
It further witnessed that Dal masoor is being sold at Rs90 per kilogramme while some shopkeepers are charged the commodity at Rs 110 per kilogramme. Likewise, dal channa is being sold at Rs 120 per kg while some charged at Rs 140 per kilogramme. Dal chilka (green) is being sold at Rs 130 per kilogramme, while dal chilka (black) available at Rs 140-150 per kilogramme in retail market.
A visible variation in prices of white lobiya was noticed as some shopkeepers are charged Rs 120 per kilogramme while other sold at Rs 100 per kilogramme. Dhoti dal priced at Rs 110 per kilogramme and Rs 120 per kilogramme. Moonge is being sold at Rs 100 per kilogramme, while others selling at Rs 110 and Rs 120 per kilogramme.
Gram flour (baisen) is being sold at Rs 120 and Rs 130 per kilogramme. Sugar is being sold at Rs58 and Rs60 per kilogramme. According the survey, prices of cooking/ghee was remained unchanged in retail market as available within range of Rs 150, Rs 180 and Rs 200 per kilogramme/litre.
Price of tomatoes has soared up in retail market, as available at Rs 100 and Rs 120 per kilogramme, the survey witnessed. It added that ginger is being sold at Rs 240 per kilogramme against the price of Rs 200 per kilogramme in the previous week. Onion is being sold at Rs40 per kilogramme against the rate of Rs 25-30 per kilogramme in the last week.
The survey further said that lemon is being sold at Rs 120 per kilogramme, which was selling at Rs 100 per kilogramme in last week. Green chili is being available at Rs80 per kilogramme. Cucumber is being sold at Rs40 and Rs50 per kilogramme. Carrots are being sold at Rs50-60 per kilogramme. A bundle of radish is being sold at Rs 15 and Rs 20 per kilogramme.
Arvi is being sold at Rs80 per kilogramme which was selling at Rs50 per kilogramme during last week. Price of peas has also increased as available at Rs70 per kilogramme against the price of Rs50 per kilogramme in the last week.
Ladyfinger is being sold at Rs 120 per kilogramme, while some shopkeepers are charged Rs80 per kilogramme. Capsicum is being sold at Rs80 per kilogramme. Bringle is available at Rs50 per kilogramme, while turnip available at Rs 30 per kilogramme.
The price of cauliflower increased by Rs 10 per kg to Rs50 per kg against Rs40 per kg last week; potato price increased by Rs5 per kg and is being sold at Rs 30 per kg against Rs 25 per kg, cabbage price registered an increase of Rs5 per kg is available at Rs40 per kg against Rs 35 per kg in the last week. Prices of okra, karela, kado and other vegetables also registered increase in prices. Kareela is being sold at Rs 60 per kilogramme.
The prices of live chicken and chicken meat have registered an increase of Rs 10 per kg and Rs 15 per kg. Last week live chicken was available at Rs 166 per kg, and chicken meat at Rs 185 per kg, which this week is being sold at Rs 156 per kg. Farm eggs are being sold at Rs 100-100 per dozen which was selling at Rs 120 and Rs 130 in last week.
Butchers are openly defying the official price of cow meat in local market. The survey said that cow meat is being sold Rs400 per kilogramme against the official rate of Rs 300 per kilogramme in local market. Mutton beef is available at Rs800 per kilogramme.
Fruits as a staple food, which are available at high rates in provincial capital Peshawar. Apples are being sold at Rs 120 and Rs 150 per kilogramme. Pomegranate is being sold at Rs 100 per kilogramme, orange at Rs80 per dozen, kinnow at Rs60 per kilogramme. Guava is being sold at Rs 100 per kilogramme in local market.
