Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is taking several steps for betterment of female players in the country, said senior general manager Women Cricket (PCB) Shahid Aslam. "We at the PCB are trying to make things better for the female players," he said, speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 14th All Pakistan Higher Education Commission Inter-University Women Cricket Championship that kicked off at Shalimar Cricket Ground, here on Friday.
Teams of 16 universities from across Pakistan are participating. Kinnaird College for Women was the winner of the previous championship. Among others, the opening ceremony was attended by renowned cricketers Sana Mir and Muhammad Waseem. Aslam appreciated the HEC for organising the Inter-University Women Cricket Championship. He also praised the participating universities for their professionalism and inclusion of experienced coaches.
He hoped that with the HEC collaboration, the PCB would be able to use potential of female cricketers in the right direction. Waseem said that it is good to see women coming forward in sports like all other fields of life. He said number of women cricketers was increasing in Pakistan and women cricketers were also rising at international level. He advised female players to consider professions such as coaching and umpiring while finalising their career paths.
HEC Director Sports Faisal Butt lauded all the participating universities for giving special attention to women cricket. He said that alongside various other initiatives for development of higher education sector in the country, the HEC was focusing to create opportunities for mental and physical development of university students.
"Every year, HEC organises 35 men and 25 women sports championships at the HEC-recognised universities across Pakistan," Butt said. The final match of the championship will be played on March 26, 2019.
