The IMF mission chief for Pakistan has left the country after holding discussions on recent economic developments and prospects for the country in the context of ongoing discussions toward a Fund-supported programme.
However, as pointed out by Business Recorder in its news item 'Broad govt-IMF agreement still elusive?' in its Thursday's issue, the statement lacks details giving rise to intense speculation in the federal capital that a broad agreement was not reached on a new programme which has been under negotiations since November 2018. The recent claim of finance minister Asad Umar about narrowing of the gap between the government the IMF on the reform agenda for the next programme is not reflected in the Fund statement.
The recent IMF engagement seems to have been unfortunately characterised by an unsavoury controversy. The villain of the piece is the United States of America.
