Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Prof Mohammad Saeed Quraishy said that there is one neurologist for more than one million people in Pakistan, because at the present moment, the overall number of neurologists is 200.
This is although not sufficient but fair enough because in 1980s there were only two neurologists in Karachi and throughout the province of Sindh. It is very encouraging that the trend of neurology is increasing in Pakistan.
He expressed his views while speaking as chief guest at the 26th National Neurology Conference.
The conference was organised by the Department of Neurology, Dow University in collaboration with Jinnah Sindh Medical College and Pakistan Society of Neurology.
The conference was addressed by the President of Pakistan Society of Neurology (PSN), Prof Athar Jawed, Chairperson Neurology Conference and the head professor of Neurology Department, Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof Naila Naeem Shehbaz, Co-Chairperson of Neurology Conference and professor of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College, Prof Khalid Sher and other specialists.
He added that every year, Neurology Conference is highly appreciated for the promotion of neurology in Pakistan. Through this conference, our new doctors enhance their skills and capabilities of research. The conference has significantly increased the number of neurologists in Pakistan. But even today, it is insufficient as compared to the population here.
The president of PSN, Prof Athar Jawed said that the purpose of organising a conference in Pakistan every year is to bring together the experienced neurologists, let them know about your experiences and promote neurology itself. He highlighted his services for neurology as PSN president in improving neurological health care services in Pakistan which led to inclusion of neurological disorders in Punjab health card.
He also announced scholarships and grants for the junior neurologists and faculty members to conduct research and present scientific papers internationally. He also advised neurologists to apply for stoke units grants and fellowships opportunities by fulfilling criteria of PSN.
He told that ten neurologists came from America, Canada, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore and Dubai to inform about the modern ways of diagnosis and treatment methods of various diseases through hands-on workshop.
Due to the increasing number of patients, special attention is needed in this field. The PNS also has funds for its promotion.
We will encourage the arrival of young doctors in the neurology sector. For this purpose, free scholarships along with funded course work will be provided in different cities to encourage the new doctors.
