A parliamentary panel has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Employees Trust (PTET) to pay pensioners' outstanding dues in one week, besides completing homework. The subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication met with Senator Rukhsana Zuberi in the chair here on Tuesday. The committee met to discuss the issue of payment of increase in pension of the retired employees of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), payable by the PTET.
The committee was informed that TNT employees were included in the PTCL and they had to be provided equal rights to those of other government employees, but they were not paid in the shape of increase in pension. The committee was further informed that the PTCL Board of Directors cannot amend the rules. After the nonpayment of increase in pension, 343 employees had gone to the Supreme Court where they were given relief while other employees are yet to be paid.
Rukhsana Zuberi termed the non-implementation of apex court's decision contempt of the court and against the laws. She said if the apex court has given a decision then it is applicable to all the employees. She further said that the investment done by the PTET needs to be examined.
The committee was informed that pension payment of TNT employees was due, but the board of trust framed its own rules, which have no legal status and the payment of pension was rejected. The committee taking strong notice of absence of PTCL officials directed them to attend the next committee meeting. Rehman Malik said that pension should be paid at the earliest, adding they would not allow violating the apex court's decisions.
