Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir suffered 31.5 percent rainfall deficit during Jan-Mar 2019 - the country's winter rainy season, the Met Office said on Thursday. The rain shortage also struck several districts of Sindh including Badin, Hyderabad, Sajawal, Sanghar, Umerkot, Thatta and Tharparkar, which are facing a moderate drought. It said that the drought has scaled back in Balochistan after recent rains.
Similarly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed about 19 percent shortfalls in rain during the season, the Met Office said in its drought situation report with a subject titled 'Back to Normal'.
Overall rainfall in Sindh was a 262.6 percent more than the normal, Punjab 113 percent, and Balochistan 31.8 percent. The country overall received 64 percent more rainfall against the normal, the Met Office said, adding that the keeping view the present situation, the normal conditions are likely to prevail over Balochistan and some districts of Sindh.
In the next 24 hours: A scattered dust-thunderstorm with rain and gusty winds is expected in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Mardan, Bannu, D I Khan, Quetta, Zhob and Sibbi Divisions, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Isolated falls may hit Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sukkur, Bahawalpur and D G Khan Divisions and Islamabad. Hot and dry weather is likely elsewhere in the country on Friday.
In the last 24 hours: A hot and dry weather prevailed over the most parts of the country with an isolated dust-thunderstorm and rain in Malakand, Kohat, Bannu, Kalat and Sibbi Divisions. A maximum temperature was recorded in Mithi, Chhor and Shaheed Benazirabad 43 degrees Celsius, each and Dadu and Hyderabad 42, each.
Bannu received 10 mm of rainfall, Sibbi 5 mm, Parachinar 4 mm, Kalat 3 mm and Saidu Sharif and Kalam 1 mm, each over the past. "A shallow westerly wave is affecting upper and central parts of the country. Another westerly wave is likely to approach western parts of Balochistan on Sunday," the Met Office said.
Heat Wave: Temperature in Karachi is expected to range up to 36 degrees Celsius with 75 percent humidity on Friday, as a hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over the city. Mercury level touched 36 degrees Celsius mark on Thursday, the Met said.
