Participants at a Multi-Party Conference (MPC), sponsored by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has unanimously demanded of the provincial government to exempt the Bus Rapid Transit affected traders from all taxes for next ten years and urged the National Accountability Bureau to conduct impartial inquiry into alleged corruption in the BRT project. They also appealed the Supreme Court to take suo motu over misuse in funds of this public-welfare scheme.
The MPC titled "Corruption in BRT project and Peshawar issues" was chaired by JI provincial Ameer, Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, held under the aegis of JI district Peshawar at press club here on Friday.
JI district Peshawar Ameer, Ateequr Rehman, former provincial minister, Hafiz Hashmat Khan, JI youth wing President Siddique ur Rehman Paracha and the other leaders were also present.
Notable speakers were Zulfiqar Afghani from PPP, Haroon Safaid from PML-N, Maulana Amanullah Haqqani, Haji Ghulam Ali, Abdul Jalil Jan from JUI-F, Malik Adeel Awan from QWP, Sartaj Khan of ANP, Haji Mohammad Hashmat from JI, leader of Peshawar Qaumi Jirga, Khalid Ayub, traders leader Haji Mohammad Afzal, Zafar Khattak, BRT affected traders, members of business community and others.
The participants observed that the businesses in the city have suffered heavy losses due to delay in completion of the BRT project. They added that around 50 percent traders had shifted their businesses to locations due to this project.
The speakers expressed serious concern over alleged corruption in BRT and its cost escalation from Rs 49 billion to Rs 68 billion.
They asked the government to compensate the affected traders and exempt them from all provincial tax for next ten years.
