Northwest European gasoline refining cracks edged lower on Friday but were underpinned by a labour strike at Europe's biggest refinery and strong US demand. Strikes have curbed production at Shell's 400,000 barrel per day (bpd) Dutch oil refinery in Pernis to 65 percent since Tuesday and are expected to keep it at that level at least until Monday, the FNV union said on Friday.
A fire was brought under control early on Friday after an explosion at a Malaysian oil refinery being developed by state oil firm Petronas, which was testing its facilities ahead of planned commercial operations this year. US gasoline stocks fell by 7.7 million barrels last week, Energy Information Administration data showed on Wednesday, compared with expectations for a 2 million barrel drop in a Reuters poll of analysts.
Chinese independent refiner Shandong Haiyou Petrochemical Group aims to restart its key crude oil unit in June, a year after it was idled following a bankruptcy filing, according to four sources with knowledge of the matter. The US Environmental Protection Agency on Friday took the first step to revive part of a rule that could, if finalised, reveal the names of oil refineries that applied for exemptions from the nation's biofuel laws.
