Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is serious, the opposition is ready to review National Accountability Bureau (NAB) law.
"We think that NAB law is a black law and the NAB was made by former President General Pervez Musharraf (retd) for political engineering and vengeance. The PPP thinks that there is need to change the whole NAB law. We know that it may be impossible to change the whole law at this time. However, we will try our level best to bring maximum changes in the NAB law," said Bilawal while talking to media persons after addressing a conference titled 'A Dialogue with Parliamentarians for Implementation of Legislation Protecting Fundamental Rights' on Friday.
He said that accountability should be made across the board. There needs to be one system for everyone. Accountability law should be equal for all including judges, generals and politicians, he added.
Answering a question, the PPP chairman said that there is only one umpire in Pakistan and that is public. "In a democracy, it is the will of the people which is followed and not any third umpire," he added.
Answering another question about the possibility of a presidential system and the rollback of the 18th Amendment, the PPP chairman reiterated that any such move would be resisted by his party. "You cannot bring a presidential system through undemocratic means. The PPP and other democratic forces of this country will reject this."
He said that the government has so far not shown any seriousness and has failed to even pass a bill. "It is not showing any interest in the Parliament or the economy," Bilawal said.
Bilawal said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an important project and the PPP will allow the PTI government to compromise on it.
The people of Pakistan know that this is an important project for the future of the country as well as prosperity of this region, he added.
Talking to media persons on the occasion, Senator Mushahid Ullah Khan appreciated Bilawal for discussing various issues of human rights in the conference and said that such conferences would be continued.
Munizae Jahangir, daughter of late Asma Jahangir, talking to media said that there is consensus of all participants, including lawyers and parliamentarians, on many issues related to human rights. She said the Parliament should protect the rights of the people and legal community should also play its due role.
She said that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) should be made an independent body. She said, "We recommended that Journalist Safety Bill should be moved forward."
