Institute of Surgical Technology successfully functioning and catering the need of surgical industry of Sialkot. The major objective of the establishment of Institute of Surgical Technology (IST) was to provide skilled work force in different surgical instruments manufacturing process enabling the local industry to cope with fast changing international trends easily as well as tracking it on modern production lines.
In order to address the problems and challenges of surgical industry the revamping of Metal Industries Development Centre along with establishment of Institute of Surgical Technology had been completed at a cost of Rs234.351 million and Rs334.384 million respectively and operating successfully by Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA).
Sources in MIDC told Business Recorder on Wednesday that the basic concept of establishment of Institute of Surgical Technology was to produce trained and skilled workforce for catering the needs of the surgical industry while overhauling of MIDC was to provide modern common facility, advisory service and transfer of technology to the small businessmen engaged with the industry. It may be added that MIDC was established during 1942-43 after World War-11 on the directive Queen Victoria in the recognition of skill and craftsmanship of local artisans and for the promotion of small makers and businessmen engaged with surgical industry.
The MIDC has been equipped with latest machinery for catering the requirements of the industry while MIDC had earned more than Rs21.742 million so far by providing different services to the industry enabling it to compete international market with quality products.
The major objective of MIDC in Sialkot was providing modern facilities, technology and adversary services to the businessmen. The management and workers of MIDC had played a pivotal role in the promotion of Surgical industry as a result of the surgical industry was recognized in international market. By virtue of successful functioning of MIDC the local surgical industry is producing most modern surgical equipments and this centre offering services to the industry. After revamping presently MIDC Sialkot is offering common facility services in the field of Vertical Machining Centre, CNC Wire Cut, Grinding, Laser Marking, Laser Welding, Argon and Spot Welding, Vacuum and Conveyer Belt Heat Treatment and Gas Fired tempering.
MIDC Sialkot is also providing advisory services in the field of Management, Quality Control, Material Testing and Inspection, Heat treatment, Engineering Design, Small and Medium Entrepreneurship, and Career Developing, as many as 259 trainees have been passed out from MIDC and IST Sialkot after getting successful training in the field of Certificate in Computer Applications (CCA), CNC Machinist and Auto CAD (2D & 3D) while a new batch of students is under training in the field of CNC Machinist and Auto CAD (2D & 3D).
The export of surgical instruments remained low against the quantity of about 150 million instruments per year.
