The Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought a reply from Punjab transport department within a month on a petition challenging functioning of android application based taxi services Uber and Careem. The court asked a law officer to apprise under what law or regulations the respondents cab services had been providing their services.
The court observed that prima facie these companies had not been governed by the provincial transport department or urban transport corporation. The law officer sought time to furnish a reply after taking instruction from the respondent departments. A citizen Muhammad Aftab pleaded that the mobile-app taxi companies launched their services without approval by any department of the government.
He contended that there were no regulations available with the transport department to govern mobile-app taxi service. He said the private cars were being used for commercial purposes without any permit. The petitioner sought a court's direction for the government to stop functioning of the online cab services or regulate them.
