Karachi Water & Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) investment plan will be implemented in four phases in 12 years involving $ 1.6 billion local and foreign funding. According to official documents available with Business Recorder, the KWSSIP investment plan for the entire programme spreads over 12 years in four phases having both components of reforms and investments aiming to provide relief to entire population of the Karachi City KWSSIP Phase-I''s cost comes around 100 million dollar, which will be implemented in four and half years. It includes studies and implementation on stage wise basis for institutional reforms including revenue enhancement, phase wise rehabilitation works for sewerage & water supply including Non-Revenue Water (NRW) reduction, investments in Katchi Abadis and the relevant contract & project management works.
Phase-1 also includes the preparation of design and safeguards documents for the investments of Phase II. Phase-II of KWSSIP''s cost has been estimated at $ 500 million and it would encompasses the studies and implementation on stage wise basis for institutional reforms from Phase-I, continued phase-wise rehabilitation works for sewerage & water supply including NRW reduction, investment in Katchi Abadies and relevant contract and project management works. In this phase, the largest investment will be Malir Basin wastewater inceptors and treatment plant works and K-IV and augmentation/ downstream works. Phase-III of the project also involves $ 500 million financing and it includes studies and implementation on stage wise basis for institutional reforms continued from Phase-I & Phase-II, continued phase-wise rehabilitation works for sewerage & water supply including NRW reduction, investment in Katchi Abadies and relevant contract and management works. In this phase, large investment will be phase-I of Wastewater Collection Treatment project, i.e, S-IV and other continued and rehabilitation works. Phase-IV of the project also involves $ 500 million financing and it includes studies and implementation on stage wise basis for institutional reforms continued from phase-I, phase-II and phase-III, continued phase-wise rehabilitation works for sewerage & water supply including NRW reduction, investment in Katchi Abadies and relevant contract and management works.
In this phase, the large investment will be phase-II of wastewater collection and treatment, i.e, S-IV. The phase-I of the project has been recommended to Ecnec recently by Central Development Working Party (CDWP). The total cost of this phase will be shared by the Sindh government and international financial institutions. Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and World Bank (WB) will equally share 80 percent of the cost by extending loans and grants whereas 20 percent would be local component.
The project will facilitate improve capacity Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB) to provide better water and sanitation services to citizens of Karachi and carryout out routine activities of development, operation and management water, wastewater treatment infrastructure and facilities.
