Partly Facetious: The 'national' leaders

"M A Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, remains alive in our hearts even today."
Published May 31, 2019

"M A Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, remains alive in our hearts even today."
"We revere him in this country and rightly so."
"Indeed, and let's not forget his alma mater Lincoln's Inn has a plaque commemorating his achievement in creating Pakistan. Stanley Wolpert, a historian, summarized Jinnah's impact on history: few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three."
"And then there was Z A Bhutto - whether one voted for him or not, whether one focuses on his mistakes that were major league or not, there is genuine respect for him because he bowed before no one and refused all deals on offer."
"The party he founded talks of judicial murder and..."
"In the past, our judiciary has been known to follow the dictates of a dictator."
"Ah yes, but we don't have dictators no more - civilian rule has been going on for eleven years now..."
"Hmmm, so tell me now where does the trio stand in history?"
"Trio? Are you referring to the three centers of power in this country - the executive, the judiciary and no, not the legislature that remains toothless, but the ubiquitous establishment?"
"No, I am referring to the three leaders who consider themselves national leaders - Zardari sahib, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan."
"Based on their achievements till date, I don't think either of these three would have a mausoleum built by the government."
"Not even if the PPP is in power in Sindh?"
"Don't be facetious. I reckon Zardari sahib will be laid to rest either next to his spouse or maybe with the Zardari clan, Nawaz Sharif in Raiwind next to Kulsoom Nawaz."
"I see, and The Khan?"
"In Bani Gala unless of course The Khan shows some steel on matters other than incarcerating Zardari sahib and Nawaz Sharif and begins to make a difference..."
"I wish The Khan well, very well, I wish him a mausoleum but that depends on what he does as prime minister."
