The city faced acute water shortage during last couple of days although Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) said it could not supply around 345 million gallons of water from Dhabeji pumping stations after its system was hit by major power breakdown on Friday evening.
However, KWSB said the operation to restore water supply is in full swing. In a detailed statement, the water utility stated that technical teams were working at the site to resolve the issue. The weekly holidays of the officials were suspended to restore water supply to the parts of metropolis.
Eight illegal water lines were also disconnected. The concerned K-Electric system caught fire, resulting in suspension of water to Karachi for 13 hours. This caused acute water crises in the metropolis on Saturday and Sunday, the statement said.
On directives of its Managing Director (MD) Asadullh Khan, KWSB has set up 16 water camps at different city locations, including NIPA roundabout, Safoora roundabout, Korangi, Landhi, as the volunteers served citizens with water to reduce negative impacts of hot weather.
According to K-Electric spokesperson, supply to Dhabeji pumping station restored on priority. The power utility's maintenance and repair teams were immediately mobilised for swift restoration of supply. The teams worked tirelessly while adhering to all safety parameters and ensured timely rectification of the fault.
The spokesperson said KE exempted all major water pumping stations of KWSB from load-shedding in the larger interest of Karachiites. In addition to ensuring seamless power supply to all strategic installations of KWSB, KE also extends all possible technical support and maintains close coordination with KWSB teams round the clock.
The power utility has also deputed a dedicated technical team for resolution of any technical issues at KWSB strategic facilities on priority. It further said the KE teams also periodically conduct surveys at Dhabeji and other strategic installations of KWSB to ensure seamless KE operations.
